About the area

The De Zalze Estate lies in the heart of the world renowned Cape Winelands, 5 km away from the beautiful and historic university town of Stellenbosch, which is in itself a popular tourist destination for it's historic, architectural and cultural value as well as it's laid back coffee shop culture. In the evenings you can attend classical music performances and music and theatre productions at the Endler Hall and the Kleine Libertas and Oude Libertas theatres, or enjoy an evening out in one of many bars/taverns featuring local bands.Their is an abundance of good restaurants as well, including the The Big Easy, a very good and classy restaurant co-owned by golfing star Ernie Els. On Saturdays you can buy fresh produce and other goods at two markets, and on any day you can drive around the area and visit some of the most famous wine estates in the country, all within a half hour drive from the town.

Across the road from the estate is a smallish, very pleasant and clean shopping mall which also offers a good restaurant and coffee shop, and on the estate itself you will find the Terroir restaurant which consistently features in the top four restaurants in the country, as well as the prize winning Klein Zalze wine cellar, where you can taste lovely wines. The estate also offers cycling or walking along the fairways and the Blaauwklippen river, and canoeing and fishing on two large dams, where an abundance of bird life can also be viewed. You are also likely to encounter the odd rabbit or mongoose.

A half hour drive to the south lies the coastal town of Strand, which offers pristine beaches and safe bathing
