Boulders Beach is no ordinary beach, it is most famous for it's colony of African Penguins, formerly known as Jackass pengins because of their distinctive donkey-like braying call, who are permanent year-round residents of the beach. From just two breeding pairs in 1982 the colony has grown to about 3,000 in recent years. Bordered mainly by indigenous bush above the high-water mark on the one side, and the clear waters of False Bay on the other, the area comprises a number of small sheltered bays, partially enclosed by granite boulders that are 540 million years old.
Boulders beach itself is small and secluded which makes it an ideal spot for families with children and the water, although very cold (even in summer), is perfect for paddling or bathing. Numbers on the beach are stricly limited and low tide is the best time to visit as at high tide the beach shrinks to the size of a postage stamp. There is also a good restaurant and gift shop next to the car park.
